June 4th, 2014 - Report by Angelique Edgerton

With the warmer weather and the impending onset of summer, the forest floor has sprung to life and the understory stands on display. On a recent hike at Sweetheart’s Bluff in Grand Marais, fly honeysuckle (Lonicera canadensis), northern bluebells (Mertensia paniculata), Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), and even one or two starflower (Lysimachia borealis) were all in bloom.

Up on the Pincushion trails, many of those same plants, along with dwarf red raspberry (Rubus pubsecens), bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), swamp currant (Ribes triste), gooseberry (Ribes hirtellum was the species we saw), bittercress (Barbarea vulgaris), and forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpoides) were flowering, while the willows (Salix species) had gone to fruit.

Just over the hill, near the Devil Track River, we found even moreMarsh Marigolds - Photo by Erik W. L. Anderson plants in bloom, including sand violet (Viola affinis), kidney-leaved violet (Viola renifolia), downy yellow violet (Viola pubsecens), spring beauty (Claytonia caroliniana), nodding trillium (Trillium cernuum), and marsh marigold (Caltha palustris).

Down along the rocky shoreline of Lake Superior, the main attraction is bird’s-eye primrose (Primula mistassinica). And throughout the county, the Juneberries (Amelanchiar interior and other species) are in bloom, promising a good future crop for jams.
