June 11th, 2014 - Report by Angelique Edgerton

The combination of rain followed by sunshine over the past week has stimulated both the mosquito and fly populations, as well as our forest wildflowers. Down along the shoreline, bird’s eye primrose (Primula mistassinica), bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), and strawberries (we saw Fragaria virginiana) decorate the landscape.

Further inland, along the Pincushion trails, bunchberry, red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea), forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpoides), northern bluebells (Mertensia paniculata), Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), non-native lupines (Lupinus polyphylus), dwarf raspberry (Rubus pubescens), and wild sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis) were in bloom. Plants like yarrow (Achillea millefolium) and hawkweed (Hieracium species) are budding and soon to bloom.

Further inland, along the Gunflint Trail near mid-trail, goldthread (Coptis trifolia), star-flower (Lysimachia borealis), and the blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) were in flower. Not quite time to pull out the blueberry buckets, but that season is coming!
