Wildflowers of the Northwoods and BWCA

This is the beginning of our 25th year of looking at wildflowers in Cook County, MN. We are three senior women who just love to get out and explore and learn new things. We are even getting together all winter but don't find too many flowers at that time, but no matter.

After coffee and seeing the beautiful Wild Purple Clematis in L's woods we drove up the closest #14 and over on #60. The new light green leaves against the backdrop of the evergreens are still lovely and this week we have added to the picture the many lush ferns: Ostrich, Sensitive, Lady, Bracken, Interrupted and Beach ferns. The Black Flies are out in droves so more time was spent in the car than usual. Along that route we saw, from the car: Mertensia, Bunchberry, Buttercup, Yarrow, Wild Lily-of-the-Valley, Dewberry, Pussy-toes, Winter Cress and the most blooming Clintonia (Bluebead Lily) we have ever seen. We also saw many Strawberries, Baneberry, Marsh Marigolds, Blue & Yellow Violets, Nodding Trillium and the beginning of Lupine. The blooming trees & shrubs we saw were: Pin Cherry, Red-Osier Dogwood, Chokecherry, Mountain Ash and Lilacs at their best.

Since we were near Hedstrom's Mill & Devil Track river we decided to look at the Wildflower Sanctuary. It was sad - it hasn't been taken care of and many trees were in the paths. The river sounded so good as we got out of the car. We did see some things blooming that we hadn't seen on our driving trip: Starflower, Wood Anemone, Wild Sarsaparilla (the leaves are reddish when they are new), six showy Trillium, Nodding Trillium and Red Trillium.

After lunch we went down on the shore out towards the Lighthouse. The Bird's-eye Primrose were mostly through blooming but there were quite a few Butterworts.

If anyone has time the Laurel should be blooming on the Lima Grade. Our Wednesdays are just too short!!
