June 25, 2003 - Wildflowers of the Northwoods and BWCA

This report is written by Lorraine Anderson (lorraine@bwca.cc). She is part of a group of three seniors that have been looking at wildflowers in Cook County, Minnesota. They have gone out almost every Wednesday for over 20 years and love it, even in the winter. But of course there aren't any flowers in the winter!!

Wednesday Wildflower Report:  June 25, 2003
We took Devil Track road to Ball Club.  There were so many lovely flowers on the roadside - Yellow Hawkweed, Ox-eye Daisys & Bird's-foot Trefoil.  We walked down to Junco River at the Canoe Access - many different flowers.  At the Trestle Pine snowmobile parking area - just before Trestle Pine Road, we found an area with many One-flowered Wintergreen.  Then up Trestle Pine Road to Pit Lake to see the Pitcher Plants, Blue Flag Iris & Upright Bindweed.  Then to The Grade to the Iris spot just before the Caribou Trail.  On the upper side of June25-1Condensed.jpg (96874 bytes)the road were many Linnea in the bright sun - go figure.  Then back to Bally Creek Road to the spot we see many Pipsissewa.  They were in bud but oh so many Gay Wings.  We always enjoy the Bally Creek Road - so much diversity.  Then to B's house for lunch at 4:30.  The woods were hot (74 degrees) and muggy and buggy so we appreciated the air conditioned car in between stops.  Not mentioned previously were the beautiful Wild Roses, there were so many.
