Wildflowers August 14, 2002

Found blooming in Cook County, Minnesota by Lorraine Anderson (Be sure to check out the past reports linked at the right as well!)

After a morning treat of homemade, hand picked Blueberry Muffins we headed to a Red Pine forest above the Maple Hill Cemetery. Jean wanted to show us some Indian Pipes. We saw the ones she found and then found about 100 more. We have never seen so many! They were at all stages. (View more photos of Indian Pipes on the BWCA Discussion Board.) Then there were many of these "mystery plants". L & J thought they were Autumn Coralroot, Corallorhiza odontorhiza. B. thought they were seed pods from Spotted Coralroot. We didn't have our Orchid book along but when we did check - the Autumn Coralroot only lives in S.E. MN. - so we (L&B) think that B was right. J. still believes it is the Autumn one. I guess that will have to be another quest, finding the known seedpods of the Spotted Coralroot. J also showed us a beautiful stand of Jewelweed in full bloom.
B&L left J to prepare for her company and went to the Ski Hill Rd just above town and walked South on the Superior Hiking Trail. It is such a beautiful woods. We saw lots of Bunchberries (in berry) and leaves for Goldthread & Linnea. We must go back there next spring - but there are so many places to go in the spring.
We had lunch at the Scenic Overlook and instead of just eating and enjoying the view we had to get busy with our books and identify Pale Smartweed, European Stickseed and Northern Willow Herb. There were two things B brought home to identify because we had no luck finding them. The fruit bushes were in berry: Chokecherry, Pin Cherry & Juneberry.
The highway is beautiful with the Fireweed, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Yarrow, Goldenrod, Pearly Everlasting, Sow Thistle, etc. The Fireweed gives us 3 shows: when it is in flower, when the flowers are almost over and the beautiful pink of the seed pods and the white fuzzy down of the seeds. Another Wonderful Day!!

The "Mystery" has now been solved... Two years later!
