Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness

BWCAW is Not the Place for More Motorboats

The Friends needs your help to build public awareness and support for the lawsuit it filed Jan. 14 to stop the tripling of motorboat permits on three BWCAW lake chains. This misguided Forest Service initiative increases the noise in the wilderness and makes a largely quiet area seem like any lake in Minnesota. It is critical that the public learn about this threat and why the Friendsí lawsuit is necessary. The Friends is joined in the suit by six conservation and recreation groups, which are organizing under the name Minnesotans Like It Wild.

We need you to write letters to your newspaper, call your Member of Congress, and distribute information or petitions at community events. The Friends is likely to face loud, organized opposition and it is crucial that we counter with the voices of our members and allies. With your help, we will enhance public support for the suit.

If you write a letter to your local newspaper, or to your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators, consider including some of the following points: 1) Increasing motorized use in the BWCAW diminishes the experience of visitors seeking solitude, quiet, and wildlife viewing opportunities; 2) Increasing motorized use in the BWCAW impairs the wilderness for future generations; 3) Motorized use is allowed on more than 98 percent of the nationís surface waters; we donít need more motorized use in the BWCAW; and 4) The suit is more than some environmental groups taking action. These groups represent thousands of BWCAW users.

To send a letter, visit the Friendsí website at http://www.friends-bwca.org/programs/act_now.html. On this site you will find contact information for members of Congress and Minnesota newspapers.

If you would like to distribute information or a petition to your church, social organization, athletic team, or civic group, please contact the Friends at (612) 332-9630 or sarah@friends-bwca.org and we will mail these materials to you. Please help us in this effort, because it is your voice today that will protect the wilderness tomorrow.
