Cook County authorities reported Monday that a 22-year-old Woodbury, Minn., man drowned in Saganaga Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Thomas Patrick Ackerman drowned after his canoe apparently overturned near Spam Island while he was trying to get to shore after battling high waves.

Five others from the group with Ackerman, who was not wearing a life preserver, were rescued by a ranger at Cache Point, police said.

The Atikokan Police Department in Ontario notified the Cook County Sheriff's office of a possible drowning at 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Sunday, the Ontario Provincial Police Dive Team found Ackerman's body at about 1 p.m.
