North
Shore State Trail
Trail Conditions
Updated 4/12/13 |
Features: 146 mile natural surface trail from Duluth to
Grand Marais. The trail winds its way through the forests behind the
outer bluffs that overlook Lake Superior, and provides access to some of
the most rugged and beautiful scenery in Minnesota. The trail also
connects to GIA trails in Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Finland, Tofte and
Lutsen, as well as numerous local trails, created and maintained by
local snowmobile clubs.
For most of its length, the North Shore Trail provides a backcountry
experience and, in some areas, wilderness conditions. The great majority
of the trail is in a remote, natural and undeveloped setting, although
some logging and farms are included. Trail visitors may encounter moose,
deer, bear, fox, hawks, waterfowl and possibly timber wolves. |

Comments:
On April 1-2 we groomed the trail
from Lain Road to the Caribou parking lot for the last time this season.
Bare spots are occurring in corners and hills, and the rocks are
showing. If you do go riding, it is recommended that you start
from the Finland parking lot and head north. Ice is showing up in
more areas along the trail. Please use caution, especially where
the trail runs on the 600 Road south of the Sawbill Trail, Cook County 2
to the Blind Temperance River. Logging is occurring along the
trail approximately ten miles north of the Alger Parking Lot.
There isn't any trail base fro 3/8 of a mile in that area.

Tomahawk Trail, Isabella
Trail Conditions
Updated 3/25/13 |
Features: Trail is 86 miles long,
from Ely to the North Shore State Trail. As quoted from SuperTrax magazine:
“Typically accessed from the North Shore Trail, the Tomahawk starts off
zigzagging through the rugged highlands that stand in a miles-thick row
along the shore of the big lake. Then, crossing the ridgeline, the trail
begins a slow glide down into ancient rocky, river canyons full of
shadows and portent.” SuperTrax named the Tomahawk Trail as one of
the ten best snowmobile adventures. Only three trails in the
United States were featured. Want lodging right on the trail?
You can access the Tomahawk directly from the doors of the private
cabins at
Timber Trail (Click
here to book a cabin online). |

Comments:
All trails will be groomed this
week and again over the weekend. They are in good shape with a 7-10 inch
base. Crews have staked area lakes. If you choose lake travel, please be
sure to follow the staked trail as slush is developing on the lakes due
to the heavy snowfall received earlier this week and lake ice is never
100% safe
